Bruins to play at Fenway on Jan. 1
The NHL has given the Bruins the go-ahead to play this year's Winter Classic outdoor game at Fenway Park on Jan. 1, 2010. A source indicated their opponent could be either the Capitals or Flyers.

I wonder how this game jives with the continued restoration/expansion efforts at the park? Seems the last few years, they've gotten to work immediately after the last game of the season and finished up just before Opening Day with their various projects. They're not done, according to everything I've seen and heard, and don't plan to be done until at least 2012. Now they're plunking a huge event right into the middle of all that?

I heard the look of the park two weeks ago described as looking "like a bomb went off" because of the construction. Can't imagine it looked much different back in January. Not exactly the way you want it when you put 30,000 hockey fans in there.

And now I've read that their potential opponent might be the Canadiens, the Rangers, the Caps, and the Flyers. Gotta wonder who it will end up being.

It HAS to be the Canadiens, right?

Any word on the Red Sox game they are planning at the Garden? Are the banners in play?

Yes the opponent should be the canadians but it will most likely not be because that is not as good for NBC because they are a canadian team.

Good point. It'll be the Rangers.

Well, news broke last week, though nothing is official (the event itself, the opponent, etc). It was first reported in the Globe.
